G’Bye, JULY, G’Day, AUGUST!

Wow, it seems that the month of July had only started a few weeks ago, I think; But pretty soon, it will be very well time to turn the calendar once more, and to begin another brand-new month, only this time it is a month of days that one could typically be called dog days of summer(only I wish I knew why it’s called that)…Welcome to the final month of summer that is known as…

AUGUST!!

The month of August happens to be the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian as well as the Julian Calendars, while it is also the fifth month that has a length of 31 days, one example being the soon-to-end month of July.
For those of us who are living in the Northern Hemisphere, August is the final full month of summer, and for the kids who are living in Delaware, it is also the month in which they would have only a few more weeks of summer vacation until school begins near the end of the month(and then they’ll have time off for the Labor Day holiday weekend in September, but we’ll save that for another month); For those who are living in the Southern Hemisphere, especially those living in Australia, August just happens to be the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere. Now, in many European countries, especially I think England, for most workers August is the holiday month.

The name of the eighth month of August comes from the fact that it has been named to honor Augustus, in the days of ancient Rome; According to a Senatus consultun that had been quoted by Macrobus, he had chosen this month because it was the time of several of his great triumphs, including the conquest of Egypt.
There is not very much happening in the month of August, but let’s try and do our best by announcing some of them; August is Get Ready For Kindergarten Month, Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, Psoriasis Awareness Month, and What Will Be Your Legacy Month; Here in the U.S., August is also National Black Business Month, National Water Quality Month, National Children’s Vision and Learning Month, and National Immunization Awareness Month; On the food front, August is also Peach Month, National Dippin’ Dots Month, Sandwich Month, National Panini Month, Family Meals Month, as well as(are you ready?) National Goat Cheese Month!

But wait-There are also special weeks in the month of August as well, such as National Farmer’s Market Week(August 7-13), and in Australia, National Science Week(August 13-21). On the first Tuesday in August, there’s the National Night Out here in the good old U.S. of A., while also here in the good old U.S. of A. there is Mead Day(look THAT up!) and National Mustard Day(and what a day for hot dog lovers)!
And so, we bring this post about the month of August to a close by adding that the birth flower for this month is either the poppy or the gladiolus, which means beauty, strength of character, love, marriage and family; And finally the birthstones for the month of August are are either the sardonyx or the peridot(a mighty fine month for a certain jewel if there ever was one!).
